2017-09-28

Your Excellency Tun Datuk Seri Panglima (Dr) Haji Juhar Bin Haji Mahiruddin,

Yang Amat Berbahagia Toh Puan Datuk Seri Panglima Hajah Norlidah binti Tan Sri Datuk R.M. Jasni,

The Honorable representative of the Chief Minister of Sabah, the Deputy Chief Minister YB. Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan,

Yang Berbahagia Puan Sri Datin Seri Panglima Genevieve Kitingan,

The Sabah State Speaker, YB Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Syed Abas Bin Syed Ali,

Distinguished guests, ladies, gentlemen and friends,

  Good evening!

It is my great pleasure to have all of you with us on the occasion of celebrating the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. First of all, on behalf of the Chinese Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu, I would like to extend our warm welcome to all of you, and express our sincere thanks to you for attending the function this evening.

Over the past 68 years, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people have worked hard and realized a leap forward from regaining dignity to becoming prosperous and strong. Particularly in the recent five years, with the great efforts made by the Chinese people in striving for the “Two Century Goals” and in realizing the dream of the great renewal of the Chinese nation, the average annual growth rate of China’s GDP has reached 7.2% and the annual contribution to the world economic growth rate has reached 30%. In the first half of this year, China's economy continued to maintain a relatively high growth rate of 6.9%, ranking as the world's second largest economy. To this day, China's high-speed rail covers a total mileage of 22,000 km, the total highway mileage amounts to 131,000 km, and the total length of internet network cable lines reaches 30.41 million km, all ranking first in the world. In October this year, the Communist Party of China will convene its 19th National Congress in Beijing. The meeting will develop a new action agenda, which is in line with the requirements of the times. China's development will usher in a better tomorrow.

  Ladies and Gentlemen,

As a Chinese saying goes, “A single flower does not make spring; One hundred flowers in full blossom bring spring to the garden." China adheres to the opening-up strategy of mutual benefits and win-win cooperation, and welcomes other countries aboard the fast train of China’s development. China pursues friendship and partnership with its neighbors, upholding the friendly and good neighbors policy with the principle of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit and inclusiveness. China also advocates the building a community of shared future of mankind and commits to promoting shared developments that benefits all.

In May this year, China successfully hosted the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, which was attended by 29 heads of state or government, including Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib, as well as about 1,500 representatives from more than 130 countries. Once again, China sent to the world a positive signal of making joint effort to achieve shared peace and prosperity through developing the Belt and Road Initiative, in a manner of consultation and collaboration. Earlier this month, the BRICS Summit was held in China. President Xi Jinping called on the BRICS countries to develop ourselves to help others with the well-being of the world in our mind, and to become the positive energy in the international community. In a constantly changing world, China is willing to contribute its strength and wisdom in the peace and development of mankind, and to promote harmony and prosperity of all countries.

  Ladies and Gentlemen,

Chinese people often say, "an afar off relative is not as helpful as a near neighbor". China and Malaysia are connected in geography and bonded by profound people-to-people and cultural ties. We are good neighbor, good friends and good partners helping each other in times of need. In recent years, both sides are committed to building a diamond era of the China-Malaysia relation for the next 40 years. The bilateral relation is at its best time of history, always taking the lead among the relations between China and ASEAN countries.

Sabah-Labuan is a shining bright pearl in eastern part of Malaysia, as well as an important stop on the 21st century Maritime Silk Road. This place has a unique charm with its beautiful scenery, nice people, rich resources, multi-ethnic groups with different religions and cultures living in harmony. There are many Chinese descendants here. In the history, generations of Chinese worked hard and endured in the hardship while settling down here. They have made great contributions to the development and prosperity of the local society and economy, and to the friendship and cooperation between China and Malaysia.

In recent years, the exchanges and cooperation in various fields between Sabah-Labuan and China have entered the fast lane. More and more Chinese enterprises start to pay attention to Sabah-Labuan and decide to settle here. The cultural and educational exchanges have achieved fruitful results. Tourism is definitely the highlight. With its beautiful scenery and rich tourism resources, Sabah has attracted countless tourists from China. Last year, the number of Chinese tourists who visited Sabah was 380,000 and it is estimated to reach 450,000 this year. With the development of the Belt and Road Initiative, there are unprecedented opportunities, great potentials and broad prospects in the cooperation between Sabah-Labuan and China.

Action speaks louder than words. From now on, I will join hands with the colleagues of the Consulate General and the people of Sabah-Labuan, to continually promote the exchanges and cooperation in various fields between China and Sabah-Labuan to a higher level.

Although it has been just two weeks since I arrived in Sabah, I have been deeply attracted by the beautiful "Land Below the Wind", and have felt the warmth and sincerity of Sabahans. I believe I will have a pleasant and fulfilling time here. I also look forward to having the assistance and strong support from the various communities of Sabah-Labuan in my future work.

Lastly, let us wish the prosperity of China and Malaysia, the happiness and well-being of the people! Long live the friendship between China and Malaysia!

  Terima kasih!
