Remarks by Consul-General CHEN Peijie At the 2017 Chinese Lunar New Year Reception

  Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,

  Good evening!

  How time flies! In a blink of an eye, golden monkey sings out the past and rooster sings in the spring. Today we are gathering here celebrating the 2017 Chinese Lunar New Year of Rooster. First of all, on behalf of the Consulate General, I would like to extend a warm welcome and my New Year greetings to everyone.

  Dear friends, at the happy moment of ringing out the Old Year and ringing in the New year, in retrospect, the year of 2016 is not only outstanding but also unforgettable. Last year, China made a good start of the 13th Five-Year Plan. Dispelling the misty clouds, China’s economy has maintained stability while making steady progress. Solid efforts in poverty-relief have resulted more than 10 millions of people been lifted out of poverty. The power of development inspires and warms people’s hearts. The projects under "One Belt and One Road" Initiative were pushed forward, and on the 11th G20 Leaders' Summit held in Hangzhou city, China shared her great ideas with the rest of the world, demonstrating remarkable wisdom and charm. Later last year, Prime Minister Najib paid his 7th visit to China, hand in hand with President Xi Jinping, have promoted the bilateral relations to the highest level in history. The friendly relationship between China and Malaysia built on the basis of mutual trust, mutual respect, mutual benefits, mutual accommodation and win-win results has promoted a deepened collaboration in various fields, and pragmatic outcomes have constantly been achieved. This has benefited the peoples of the two countries, and exerted profound and positive influence to regional unity, stability, development and prosperity.

  Availing from the amicable relations of the two countries, the friendly communications between Sabah-Labuan and China have also entered fast lane in the past year. The exchanges and cooperation between the local governments, business enterprises, educational bodies, cultural organizations, media groups have been comprehensively deepened and frequent visits have been made. The cities of Kota Kinabalu and Hangzhou signed a MOU on establishment of friendly relationship, and relevant exchanges and cooperation is being carried out currently. Enterprises from the two sides signed a number of project contracts, and some have already been put into operation. Direct flights between China and Sabah have exceeded 70 flights per week with more than 380,000 tourists from Mainland China visiting Sabah for the whole year. To deepen the people to people friendship, the Consulate General organized volunteer medical clinic, subsidized and supported Chinese education, helped disadvantaged groups, promoted cultural exchanges, the China-funded enterprises were also encouraged to feedback local society while involve in the local development. All of these are results of our joint efforts, on this New Year occasion, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to you all!

  Dear friends, as an old saying goes, "the world moves on in a never-ending process of the new replacing the old." Looking forward to the future, in 2017, China will convene the Nineteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and host the International Forum on Belt and Road cooperation. Following the consensus reached by the leaders of China and Malaysia, in the belief that mankind shares the same fate as a community, the two countries will strengthen mutual trust in politics, mutual benefit in economy and mutual learning in people-to-people and cultural exchanges, which will lead the bilateral relations to a new level. I am looking forward to a bright future that the areas of China and Sabah-Labuan thrive and harvest hand by hand! I hope the local Chinese community could continue to carry forward and promote the brilliant traditional Chinese culture, to unite and help each other, and to join effort for the friendly exchanges between China and Malaysia. I hope that the China-funded enterprises and students from China in Sabah and Labuan will be proactive, motivated and work hard to integrate into the local society, establish a positive image of China and share good stories of China. I expect and believe that exchanges and cooperation between Sabah and China will be closer and more fruitful. The Consulate General will continue to implement China’s foreign policy featuring amity, sincerity, mutual benefits and inclusiveness, and help to reinforce the exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in various fields as to benefit the peoples of both countries. Upholding the principle of “people-oriented and diplomacy for the people”, we will also continue to provide hospitable consular services to the local people.

  Dear friends, the year of monkey is becoming the past and the bell of the New Year of Rooster is going to ring. As the new voyage of hope is to set sail, surrounded by the atmosphere full of joy and harmony for the forthcoming cheerful spring festival celebrated by all local ethnic groups, let us toast for peace and prosperity of China and Malaysia.
